Juan Inciarte studied economics at the Autonomous University of Madrid, where he was later a professor.In 1978, he joined Chase Manhattan Bank in London and in 1981 joined Midland Bank Spain.In 1985, he joined Grupo Santander as CEO of Banco Santander de Negocios.He was then appointed Director General (Senior Executive VP) of Retail Banking in Spain in 1989.Other positions within the Group include Director General (SEVP) of International Division, Director General (SEVP) of Treasury and Markets and Director General (SEVP) of the Risk Division.In 1999, he became Director General (SEVP) in the new Santander Central Hispano, results of the merger between Santander and Central Hispano.He held responsibilities in Asset Management, Private Banking, the Industrial Group and European Alliances Area and CEO of Santander Consumer Finance.Since January 2008, he is Head of Strategy of Santander.Presently, he sits on the Boards of Grupo Santander, Abbey National (as Vice Chairman), RFS Holdings in The Netherlands, Banif and the International Advisory Board of Grupo Santander.
In the past he was Director of The Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest Bank from January 1998 until October 2004; Director and Member of the Executive Committee of the Instituto Bancario San Paolo di Torino from March 1997 until May 2001; Director of First Union (presently Wachovia) between 1991 and 1997; Director of NIBC Bank NV in The Netherlands from 2005 until 2007, Director of ABN AMRO in the Netherlands from October 2007 to March 2010 and Director and Member of the Executive Committee of Sovereign Bancorp in the U.S.A. from June 2006 to June 2008; Director of CEPSA from July 1999 until October 2009.
Juan Inciarte is Chairman of the Spain-U.S. Council Foundation; Member of the Advisory Board of the American Chamber of Commerce in Spain; Member of the Board of Trustees of the Carlos V International Centre of the Autonomous University of Madrid and Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Scotland.
